TWMCC Holds Online Ramadan Lecture ‘Integration of Indigenous South African Culture into Integral Islamic Cultural Norms’

  • 2024-Mar-16

The World Muslim Communities Council held a virtual Ramadan lecture titled ‘Integration of Indigenous South African Culture into Integral Islamic Cultural Norms’, by Al-Hajj Tahir Muhammad Maepa, Executive Member of Muslim Shura Council.

During the lecture, Maepa emphasised that Islam serves as a compensation for the adversities in our lives, highlighting God's creation of diverse people and tribes for mutual understanding and settling the Earth.

Reflecting on South Africa's initial unfamiliarity with Islam and Arabic, Maepa mentioned a council of scholars dedicated to spreading Islamic teachings and delving into cultural and life matters.

He further emphasised the importance of delving into Islamic sciences, understanding halal, haram, and distinguishing between obligations and prohibitions.

Additionally, Maepa advocated inviting people to Islam through wisdom and good sermon, rejecting coercion.

Noting the aesthetic designs of many South African mosques, Maepa observed them as expressions of community culture and inclusivity, underscoring the significance of science councils in promoting a correct understanding of Islam based on the Holy Quran and the Prophet’s Sunnah.

TWMCC is an international non-governmental organisation, and a think tank to help organisations and associations working in Muslim communities, renew their thinking, improve their performance, and coordinate their joint work.
