The World Muslim Communities Council organized a virtual lecture as part of its Ramadan Lecture Series titled “How Fasting Enhances the Value of Self-Discipline.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Martin Kellner, Professor at the Institute of Islamic Theology at the University of Osnabrück – Germany. He spoke about the significance of fasting, explaining that it is a comprehensive school that teaches us how to control our basic needs, such as food, drink, and similar desires.

He noted that fasting represents a way of reducing our attachment to material things and the material world, highlighting that Allah Almighty sent Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to correct the relationship between human beings and the material world.

He affirmed that fasting fulfills this objective, explaining that the message of the Prophet aimed at establishing a balanced life in our engagement with the world, and that fasting teaches us how to achieve this balance.

Dr. Martin Kellner also pointed to the importance of individuals exercising control over their desires in order to attain their future aspirations.

He added that the month of Ramadan passes very quickly, and therefore we must seize its opportunity, as each day that passes from our lives will never return.

He further spoke about the importance of focusing on self-discipline and self-purification during Ramadan, stating that part of the perfection of Islam lies in leaving what does not concern us, and that one should not preoccupy oneself with the affairs of others.

In conclusion, the Professor at the Institute of Islamic Theology at the University of Osnabrück – Germany emphasized that Ramadan is a month to renew and revitalize our family relationships with our relatives and neighbors.
