The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled "Harmony of Religions and Culture of Peace in Al Andalus," presented by Dr Alfred Gutierrez Cavanagh, Professor of Globalisation Trends in the Middle East in Comillas University, Madrid.

During the lecture, Cavanagh affirmed that Al Andalus was always a meeting point between East and West, and a unique example of the diversity that characterised Spanish history on geographic, ethnic, and religious levels, noting that this blend gave rise to a flourishing civilisation that made Al Andalus a global model for coexistence.

He pointed out that Al Andalus was a beacon of knowledge and tolerance, where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived side by side and interacted within an environment that allowed the arts, sciences, and architecture to thrive. This legacy, he noted, remains present in Spanish identity to this day.

He explained that the success of this model was based on integration and mutual respect among the three religions, stressing that the advent of Islam in Spain left a profound impact on its history and enriched its cultural and civilisational heritage. He also mentioned that Spain today is home to more than two million Muslims who live peacefully within the broader social fabric.

During the lecture, Cavanagh also referred to the Document on Human Fraternity, considering it an extension of the spirit of Al Andalus in promoting peace and justice. He said that the document’s issuance from Abu Dhabi was a clear message about the importance of dialogue and rapprochement among peoples, noting that the UAE and Spain offer contemporary models of tolerance, coexistence, and the embrace of diverse nationalities and cultures.
