A delegation from The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC), headed by Chairman HE Dr Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi, has visited a number of prominent Islamic landmarks in Ürümqi, the capital of Xinjiang Province in China. The visits included the historic Shaanxi Mosque and the Grand Bazaar Mosque.

During the tour, the delegation learned about the historic Shaanxi Mosque, which dates back to the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). Built in an architectural style that blends traditional Chinese design with Islamic ornamentation, the mosque was expanded in 1906. It is considered one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks for Muslims in China, with a capacity of 500 worshippers, and has been classified as a protected cultural site since 1962.

The delegation also visited the Grand Bazaar Mosque in Ürümqi, located within the “Xinjiang International Grand Bazaar” complex, which is the largest traditional marketplace in the region. The site is distinguished by its unique architectural features, including an open mosque with four minarets. Opened in 2004, the mosque is regarded as one of the city’s most prominent modern Islamic landmarks, accommodating up to 300 worshippers.

At the conclusion of the visit, HE Dr Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi emphasised the importance of these Islamic landmarks, which reflect the depth of cultural and historical coexistence between Chinese and Islamic civilisations. He noted that the visit is part of TWMCC’s commitment to strengthening civilisational and religious dialogue, while also recognising the efforts made to preserve Islamic heritage in Xinjian
