- 2025-May-26
The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled 'The Role of Religious Educational Institutions in Serbia in Promoting Citizenship, Coexistence, and the Consolidation of Shared Values,' presented by Dr. Enver ef. Omerović, Dean of the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Novi Pazar, Serbia, as part of TWMCC's series of lectures.
During the lecture, Omerović emphasised that Muslims are an integral part of the Serbian national fabric and enjoy full religious freedoms, noting the inclusion of religious subjects in the official educational curricula, which has enabled the Islamic Sheikhdom - the highest Islamic religious authority in the country - to pass on the Islamic identity to new generations through education.
The sheikhdom pays great attention to preserving the Islamic identity and promoting the concept of citizenship and coexistence, he said, adding that kindergartens have been established and currently enrolling more than 2,000 children, as well as the Faculty of Islamic Studies, which was established in 2001, which currently enrolls 235 students in three stages of study.
He also noted the presence of 250 mosques across Serbia, reflecting the deep Islamic presence in the country.
At the end of the lecture, Omerović announced the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Islamic Studies in Novi Pazar and the Mohamed Bin Zayed University for Humanities, aiming to exchange academic expertise and develop educational programmes and practices between the two institutions.
