The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled “Peaceful Coexistence and Tolerance in Senegal,” presented by Sheikh Ahmed Salem Jing, Secretary-General of Federation of Islamic Associations in West Africa, within the Council's series of lectures.

During the lecture, Jing said that Senegal, despite being a secular state, stands as a model for peaceful coexistence among religions and religious groups, particularly the Sufi orders, which have a significant presence in the country.

He pointed out that Senegal’s population is approximately 18 million, with 95% being Muslims and 5% Christians, reflecting a religious diversity that fosters social harmony.

He added that Senegal experienced a 20-year rule under a Christian leader who had strong ties with the Muslim community, having been elected by Muslims, which highlights the spirit of tolerance and coexistence among the people.

He emphasised the importance of moderation and acceptance of others, noting that Muslims in Senegal are open to followers of other faiths and engage in mutual visits and interactions, contributing to the country’s political and social stability.

He further stated that Senegal enjoys political stability thanks to the coexistence and religious tolerance among its diverse community.

He concluded by affirming that this coexistence reflects the teachings of Islam, which encourage dialogue and openness toward others, stressing the importance of cooperation to achieve righteousness and goodness.
