TWMCC Welcomes Denmark's Decision to Ban Quran Burnings

  • 2023-Dec-07

The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) welcomed the decision issued by the Danish Parliament on Thursday, 7 December, 2023, which criminalizes the burning of the Holy Quran in public places, as this behavior represents a serious violation against religious sanctities and a provocation to the feelings of Muslims around the world.

In its statement, TWMCC affirms that taking decisions of this kind greatly supports the efforts against hate speech, extremism, exclusion, and racism, as this behavior represents a direct contradiction with international efforts seeking to spread the values of tolerance, moderation, and non-violence, and undermines the mutual respect necessary for relations between peoples and countries.

While appreciating this correct and courageous step taken by the Danish Parliament, TWMCC calls on the rest of the parliaments and legislative and legal bodies in other European countries and countries around the world to enact similar laws that criminalize these unacceptable practices, as they represent a flagrant violation of the sanctities and religious symbols of all people.

TWMCC renewed its call for the importance of distinguishing between exercising the right to express one’s opinion, which is an inherent right guaranteed to all human beings regardless of their identities and convictions, and insulting the sanctities and religious and cultural symbols of others, as exercising freedom requires a commitment to the responsibility not to violate the rights of others or harm them in any way.
