  • 2023-Apr-17

The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) organised on Sunday, 16, April 2023, a virtual lecture by Cllr. Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of the Council, Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, and board member for National Zakat Foundation, United Kingdom, under the theme "Faith-based Charity in Action: Examples and Lessons".

Cllr. Saima Ashraf said that she grew up in the shadows of religion, saw her father and mother doing good deeds, and helped them build a mosque.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, and board member for National Zakat Foundation, UK, added that when she moved to the UK, she lived in London and was able to practice religious rituals freely.

Cllr. Ashraf noted that everything she does is based on Islam and faith and she seeks to spread goodness in English society.

She added that charity doesn't have to be based on religion but should be inspired by religion, belief, and faith.

Deputy Leader of the Council, Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, and board member for National Zakat Foundation, UK, said that in the UK, we work hand in hand and cooperate with each other, regardless of secularism, which was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic; as we have been working to deliver services, food, and medicine.

She noted that we communicate with citizens and respond to their inquiries over the phone, regardless of their religion, noting that we work with the National Zakat Foundation, which is a charitable organisation, and we care about the English community in light of the soaring prices.

Cllr. Saima Ashraf affirmed that the Mosque of Barking City is a pilot project that provides services to all residents of the city, regardless of their religion.

It is noteworthy that the World Muslim Communities Council is an international non-governmental organisation that was established on May 8, 2018. It is headquartered in Abu Dhabi and has more than 900 Islamic organisations and institutions from 142 countries under it. It is considered a house of expertise to rationalise organisations and associations operating in Muslim societies, renew their thinking, and improve their performance and coordination among themselves
