TWMCC Holds "Empowering Muslim Women in European Societies" Online Lecture
- 2025-Nov-25
The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled "Empowering Muslim Women in European Societies," presented by Liya Makhmutova, President of the Muslim Women's Union of the Baltic States, within the Council's series of lectures.
During the lecture, Makhmutova addressed the reality of Muslim women in Europe, stressing that European constitutions guarantee fundamental and equal rights for all citizens and residents—whether in education, work, or various fields of life—while noting that some limited privileges, such as the right to vote in elections, are reserved for citizens.
She pointed out that Muslim women still face forms of discrimination in some European countries, due to stereotypes promoted by the media that portray them as uneducated or unintegrated. She also explained that a large segment of Muslims works in the private sector, as many are reluctant to engage in public or political work because they feel unaccepted or due to misguided religious interpretations that discourage political participation.
Addressing ways to confront these challenges, Makhmutova emphasised the importance of integrating Muslim women into European society as a key step toward improving their conditions and strengthening their presence. She also noted that there are wide opportunities for Muslim women to participate in journalism and write articles that reflect their issues and aspirations.
As for ensuring the legal rights of Muslim women in marriage, she explained that work is currently underway on a project aimed at preparing a written agreement between the spouses before marriage. This agreement would document the points agreed upon with the relevant governmental authorities in a way that guarantees women’s rights and protects their status.
