- 2025-Mar-04
The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled 'The Objectives of Fasting and Its Wisdom', presented by Dr Muhammad Shahid, the Professor of Foundations of Islamic Jurisprudence and Objectives of Shariah at Mohammed I University, the Kingdom of Morocco, as part of the TWMCC's series of lectures that shed light on the conditions of Muslims around the world.
During the lecture, Dr Muhammad Shahid reviewed the spiritual dimensions of fasting, noting that the month of Ramadan reminds Muslims of the Holy Quran, saying: 'When Ramadan arrives, the Quran is remembered, and the Quranic verses on fasting urge Muslims to uphold great responsibilities during this blessed month.'
He also stressed the importance of supplication during the holy month, citing the words of Allah Almighty: 'And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near; I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he calls on Me, so they should answer My call and believe in Me that they may walk in the right way.'
He stressed that knowledge and education are two fundamental keys for the renaissance of the Islamic nation, adding: 'Allah Almighty does not grant victory to a nation dominated by ignorance.'
He also warned of the need to avoid turning Ramadan into a month solely for food, stressing the importance of worship and contemplation, and the need to exploit the Iftar table for dialogue and bonding with children, away from distractions like television series and advertisements.
Speaking about Islamic values, he explained that mercy and ease are among the most important Islamic values, citing the biography of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who always was a model of peace and tolerance.
Dr Muhammad Shahid also discussed the meanings of repentance, explaining that it means self-accountability and self-review, and he stressed that the intention for fasting is not just a phrase we utter, it is a genuine commitment to making this month a period of spiritual growth and positive transformation.
He concluded his lecture by emphasising the importance of adhering to Allah’s teachings as brought by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), stressing that proper understanding of religion is the key to righteousness and success in this world and hereafter.
