- 2025-Feb-05
The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled “Muslim Community in Rwanda,” presented by Sheikh Ismail Seif, Executive Director of Bab Al-Khair organization in Rwanda, within the Council’s series of lectures.
During the lecture, Seif discussed the historical uniqueness of Rwanda, explaining that it is an independent country located in the Great Lakes region of East Africa, with Muslims making up 15% of the total population.
He pointed out that Islam entered Rwanda through Arab traders, especially from the southern Arabian Peninsula, who settled in the country and married Rwandan women, which helped spread Islam among the local population.
He also emphasised that Muslims have made significant contributions to Rwanda, having played a role in establishing several cities, and their Islamic and Arab influences are still evident today.
Additionally, Muslims have played an important role in providing safe havens for refugees, saving lives, and promoting national reconciliation, which has earned them the respect of the Christian majority.
He noted that Rwanda is home to many Muslim schools and mosques, and Muslim holidays, such as Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, are recognised as official public holidays in the country.
