The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled "Coexistence and Religious Dialogue in Tanzania," presented by Dr. Issa Ziddy, Expert in Islamic Affairs in East Africa, within the Council's series of lectures.

During the lecture, Ziddy highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence in Tanzania, emphasising the need to address challenges to ensure the continuation of social peace.

He pointed out Tanzania’s vast ethnic diversity which has made it a hub of identities in East Africa, influenced by both its historical background and geographical surroundings.

He also noted that Islam reached Tanzania in the 8th century, as evidenced by the remains of a mosque discovered in the region, adding that Islam then spread more widely in the 9th century and became an integral part of Tanzanian society.

He said that Tanzanian society is characterised by significant peaceful coexistence, where mosques are built next to churches, noting that an interfaith dialogue committee has been established to address sensitive issues and promote tolerance.
