The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled “Muslim Community in Nigeria”, presented by Dr Al Khader Abdul Baqi, Director of Nigerian Center for Arabic Research, within the Council's series of lectures.
During the lecture, Abdul Baqi highlighted that Nigeria is the most populous African country, with Muslims constituting between 60% and 65% of the total population, noting that Islam is widely practiced in the northern and southern regions, with a smaller Muslim minority in the east.
He explained that Islam and Christianity are the two main religions in Nigeria, adding that Islam accounts for 98% of the cultural heritage in the northern part of the country.
He also addressed the educational and democratic challenges facing Muslims in Nigeria, emphasising the importance of enhancing their political participation to reflect their status as the majority population.
