- 2024-Nov-11
The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled “Islam in Austria”, presented by Imam Fikret Fazlic, Islamic Cultural Centre of Graz, Austria, within the Council's series of lectures.
During the lecture, Imam Fikret Fazlic highlighted that Austria saw its first Quran translation into German in 1660, with approximately 31 translations available today, 26 of which were completed by non-Muslims.
He also noted that Muslims were part of the Austrian Empire, and Austria’s first Islamic legislation was introduced in 1912, adding that Islamic community began to formally organise in 1979, and mosque numbers gradually increased.
In 2015, a new Islamic law was introduced to help structure interactions between Muslim communities and various institutions in Austria, with only one official Islamic organisation in the country, Imam Fikret Fazlic said.
He added that Muslims make up between 9% and 11% of Austria’s population, meaning roughly one in ten Austrians is Muslim.
TWMCC is an international non-governmental organisation that functions as a think tank. It supports Muslim community organisations and associations by helping them improve their operations, collaborate effectively, and adopt innovative approaches.
