TWMCC Holds "Muslim Community in Japan" Online Lecture

  • 2024-Aug-22

The World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) held an online lecture, titled "Muslim Community in Japan", presented by Kyoichiro Sugimoto, Japanese Translator of the Holy Quran, within the Council's series of lectures.

During the lecture, Sugimoto emphasised his work in introducing Islam and the Quran to the Japanese people, noting the significant challenge of translating the Quran due to the differences in vocabulary between Arabic and Japanese, particularly in Quranic verses.

He mentioned that some meanings are difficult to capture precisely in translation.

To overcome this, translators aim to grasp the divine intentions in the Quran and then try to convey those meanings in Japanese. These efforts have led to a simplified Quran translation, helping the Japanese better understand Islam.

Regarding his personal journey, he shared that he embraced Islam in 1997, influenced by the generosity of his Muslim friends during his university years.

On the status of Muslims in Japan, he stated that the Muslim population has grown to 230,000, up from 30,000 in 1999, due to immigration and conversions.

TWMCC is an international non-governmental organisation that functions as a think tank. It supports Muslim community organisations and associations by helping them improve their operations, collaborate effectively, and adopt innovative approaches.
