- 2023-Apr-26
On Wednesday, 19 April 2023, the World Muslim Communities Council (TWMCC) organised a virtual lecture by Dr Emilia Justyna Powell, Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, USA, as part of the Ramadan Lecture Series under the title 'Islamic Law and International Law in Conflict Resolution'
Dr Emilia Justyna Powell, Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, USA, said that she studied Islamic law in Europe and obtained a PhD, and that the summary of her study was about civil and Islamic laws and their impact on the role of states in conflict resolution
Justyna added that she found that many people confuse the Islamic faith and Islamic law, and after she went deeper into reading, she found that Islamic law chose her until she became preoccupied with it
The Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, USA, explained that the deeper she reads, the more she realises that she has the desire to travel and learn more about Islamic laws
Justyna indicated that she had researched 200 constitutions about the word of Allah and the condition of obligating the ruler to be a Muslim, stressing that her book is not a general statement about Islamic legal culture and that she is not a scholar of Islamic law
The Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, USA said that her interest is in how Islamic law proceeds to resolve disputes in a peaceful way, stressing that we must understand the general relations between religion and international law
